It all started on the 4th of July in 1943 when 5 Russian soldiers discovered a gas deep within a mine in an undisclosed location.
The gas was assumed to be the thing numerous scientists have searched for during WWII.
It was capable of supressing the most needed urge a human being has: Sleep.

Scientists have decided to test it before it could be used on the field. Of course, the government was funfing the project in hopes to achieve the best results. Soldiers that would never need to sleep.

A bunker has been built, including a labratory for the scientist's and one room that was yet to have unforseen consequences.
A 9x9 square meter chamber made out of concrete including one little circular shaped window and a drain in the middle of the room.
Microphones were built in to observe what will be going on in the room and an intercom for emergencies.

Four war prisoners that have been help captive each for years were selected for this experiment with the "simple" task given to not sleep for 30 days whilst being in this chamber. If they were to succeed, freedom will be granted to the men.

The experiment started finally with every staff being nervous about the results and only thinking what they'll have at the end of this month.
The prisoners were escorted through the hallways and, rather roughly, put into the dark room with a ration of dried beef which would allow a man to survive for three months.
The prisoners looked at the large metal door getting closed and locked shut with one of the Russian guards making an unneccessary pun.
The gas was turned on and pumped into the room without any of the four men knowing.

The first day was running rather quiet and satisfying, little chitchats between the men, their stories, from where they came from and how they got into this situation. The days following were rather quiet, only with some scratching and tapping on the microphones which was probably curiosity leading the prisoners on a closer search.
On the fifth day, however, it all started to change as one of the men started screaming at the top of his lungs at approximiately 730am.
His screams were loud and ear piercing due to the fact he screamed right into the microphone, not stopping for hours and hours until his vocal cords ripped. The other prisoners weren't reacting to the screams, only whispering into the other microphones, licking them and snickering as if they would be possesed. Though the prisoner's cocal cords ripped, he was trying to continue the screams, only getting out coughs and rather unpleasent noises.
The scientist's were kind of relieved that it finally stopped, even though it must have been painful for the man.

The days following were neither going well. The constant whispering and noises the prisoners made were worrying the scientist's.
On the tenth day though, everything went silent inside the room, only quiet breathing could be heard if listened carefully. The scientist's were about to check the window, hoping to see what was going on inside the chamber to no avail. The window was smeared with a combination of blood and feces to avoid being looked through. So they decided to do something they have vowed not to do. Using the intercom in order to get some signs of life, anything at all...but it was hopeless aswell. No sound was made by the prisoners.
The scientist's have warned them over the intercom that it was decided to open tye chamber and send in a few guards to see what the problem was.

The chamber door was slowly opened, the squeaking of the door valve was feeding off the curiosity of everyone about what would be inside. As the door opened, the guard took a step back in shock and took out his gun, pointing at something in the chamber.
It was the prisoners he targeted until another soldier slowly lowered his arm.
The prisoners were nothing near what they originally looked like. Their skin was torn and pigment, missing some in the cranium region with lots of hair loss. Their fingertips were gone, only sharp bones remaining and sticking out if the flesh like claws which had been sharpened by teeth as later testing showed.
On the floor was a pool of blood about an inch deep due to the drain being stuffed with hair, flesh and feces. The blood was coming from one of the four men, laying dead on the ground, skinned and with bits of his flesh torn out and surrounding him.
The other three neither were in a too good condition, but that was just how it looked like.
Their stomachs were cut open and their organs plugged out, laying on the floor beside them as they sat there.
The soldiers decided to put them out of the chamber, but that's when the prisoners finally reacted.
They were aggressive and hostile towards the soldiers trying to pull them out, scratching them and ripping parts if their flesh out by using their teeth.
One soldier even got his throat ripped out.

As the remaining prisoners were restrained finally after hours of struggling, the scientist's decided to operate on them to put their organs back in place. But the prisoners refused. They demanded to be put back into the chamber and put back on the gas as if they were addicted to it in a horrible manner. One of the prisoners heart stopped the moment he left the chamber, collapsing dead on the floor.
The first surgery was impossible to do as it already failed when trying to give the prisoner narcotics.
He was screaming, scratching and biting, shouting out loud that he doesn't wanna sleep.
The scientist's have offered him to perform surgery without narcotics and he accepted the offer.
As did the other patient.
A terrified nurse could have sworn that one of the prisoners was always following her with his eyes, a wide grin across his face.

The doctors did everything they could in order to restore the bodies, flicking wherever they could. The prisoners were put back into the chamber for the time being.
A governement official, also a former KGB agent was sent to inspect the results of the experiment, after some thinking he made a final decision. The decision to put the two remaining prisoners back into the chamber and on the gas with a few scientist's to furthermore study this all. The scientist didn't accepted this.
He pleaded not to be put in a room with these things, that he wouldn't wanna end like this.
They discussed heavily until the scientist took a bystanding soldiers gun and pierced a bullet through the brain of the KGB Agent, rushing out through the hallways and into the chamber with the prisoners.
Without hesitation he shot one numerous times until no movement was there anymore and turned his attention to the other prisoner, screaming at him with a demanding tone in his voice:
"WHAT ARE YOU!! I've gotta know! I have to know what you are!!"

...

...

Silence filled the room, the guards who chased after the scientist stood in the doorway, stunned and waiting for an answer aswell as the prisoner suddenly spoke up in a deep, dark and rather calm voice...
"But don't you remember? We are the madness that lies inside you all, the darkness craving to get out but only is allowed to in your greatest nightmares...we don't wanna leave this place anymore...for you have free'd us already"

The scientist stood there in shock, the gun in his hand, pointed at the prisoner, trembling all over and slowly letting his finger press down the trigger...he finally put an end to the nightmare.......
