The man on the side of the road was an interesting one indeed. On his face is a mixture of emotions one would think impossible: relaxed, yet nervous; anxious and content; haggard, but energetic. Yes, the man on the side of the road truly was interesting, but it wasn't these mixing emotions that caught Chris's attention. "Holy-" Chris said "That dude was in cowboy clothes!" Chris then pulled to the shoulder of the road as quickly as he could. The man hadn't been signaling for a ride, but Chris offered one, regardless. "Need a ride, bud?" Chris asked.
"No." The stranger replied
"Aw, come on, I won't hurt ya“
"I said 'No'"
"Seriously, I'm trying to be nice!“
"Fine, Jesus, just quit talking to me"
"Right, totally silent"Chris said, making a zipping gesture across his mouth. The stranger climbed into the passenger seat of Chris's little green Toyota. "Where ya headed?"Chris asked.
"What happened to 'totally silent'?"
"How do you expect me to drop you off if I don't know where?"
"Just drive, I'll tell you when to pull over." As the stranger finished saying this, Chris put his car back into gear (the Toyota was a stick-shift) and started heading towards a small town called Patricia Valley, located nearly two miles east of the New Mexico/Texas border, and Chris didn't know it yet, but that small town is where his entire life will be changed drastically and permanently....... |
